Ebonite-RXS300

Posted by on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 (EST)

Smooth,Strong and Sexy are the characteristics of Ebonite's RXS300.

Ebonite’s RXS 300 is a sexy sounding name for a bowling ball. The name inspires one to think of a certain sportscar. Let’s see if this ball has the performance worthy of it’s name.

The RXS300 is an underrated performer in Ebonite’s Premiere Line of bowling balls. The RXS300 features Ebonite’s GB11.2 coverstock previously featured on the Big One. The GB 11.2 coverstock is sanded w/4000 grit Abralon and then polished with Ebonite Powerhouse Factory Finish. The core in the RXS300 is the symmetric SR mass bias. The RG for this ball is medium at 2.58 with a medium flare differential of 0.032. The ball is a different mix of royal blue pearl/purple and red and the color varies from ball to ball. We drilled this RXS300 with the pin below the fingers at 4 ½ inches from the PAP. The MB was also at 4 ½ inches. No weight hole was required. The RXS300 before drilling, weighed in at 15.03lbs with a 3.25 oz top weight and a 3” pin.

The first lane condition I test drove this ball with the flashy name was on a THS with Brunswick Anvilane. This house pattern is a lighter oil volume compared to some of the wally world type house shots out there. First impressions are usually a good indication of a how a ball is going to work for me. I had to smile after throwing this ball a few times. The RXS300 was very clean through the fronts and had a smooth/strong arc in the backend. The SR core gets this ball revving easily. A good description of this ball’s roll is that is smooth and strong. I was able to make moves left or right with this ball. I really  liked the RXS300’s recovery from dry. It’s like the ball is on autopilot when it goes out to the dry. Carry was well above average. Explosive is a good word for this ball’s carry. I was impressed at this balls ability to rev up in the midlane without being real jerky off the breakpoint. Versatility is another good word for this ball. I was able to play right and straight with less hand and more speed. This outside line really lets RXS300 flex it’s rack destroying muscles.

After having thrown this ball on a number of patterns and different surfaces, I certainly have a place for it in my arsenal. I have used this ball on sport patterns and short patterns with success on both. The PBA cheetah pattern would be a good pattern to use this ball on. It’s easy length and controlled backend motion are ideal for a pattern that plays to the right(or left if you are left handed). I find the RXS300 most effective on med-dryer patterns for my game. Those with less hand or slower ball speeds could use it on heavier patterns. If you are looking for a ball that will give you the PBA type ball movement this is the ball.

Many thanks to Ed Gallagher of Ebonite International, Bruce Heim from the National Bowling Store and Bob Hodge of Parkway Lanes, St Catharines.

Pat,

Good review on this ball, it's actually the type of ball I am looking for to fit a hole my equipment lineup. I may try one out. Thanks,

GU

PS

PS. Question? How much different would a Black Widow perform if drilled to similar specs? For a straighter shot on medium oil?

Would a slight shine help the Widow out for this purpose or would be too strong on the backends?

???

RXS300 vs. Black Widow
By Strapper on Wednesday, April 04, 2007 (EST)

Hello Gu, I think the higher differential .060 of the Black Widow would not mimic the roll characteristics of the RXS300, whose diff. is 032.. The Black Widow is a very, very good ball and extremely versatile too, but generally speaking it is much stronger than the RXS300. I'm not a big fan of changing surfaces(re:polishing or sanding) to match other balls reactions. I prefer to let the ball do it's job as intended. I hope this helps your ball purchasing decision. Best of luck, Strapper.
