Bowlers in the Lambert’s Jewelers/Bob Harris Realty/Scooter’s Restaurant of Le Roy Sunday Morning Classic League at Scopano’s Lanes put on a head-spinning scoring display last weekend, shooting four 299 games (including two in a head-to-head match), an 825 series, a 799 series, a 289 game, a 288 game and two 287 games.
Inside the numbers, the three members of the Tom’s Pro Shop team of Medina opened the morning by rolling 26 consecutive strikes and went on to post a Genesee Region USBC Association records with an 841 team game and 2,230 team series.
How prolific was the scoring, you ask? This is what Ed Doody of Pavilion, who rolled the 799 on games of 264-257-278, had to say about it.
“Unbelievable,” he said. “I shot the three games I did and wasn’t even close for any of the four weekly jackpots (high game each game and series).”
Let’s sort it out, in chronological order:
n GAME ONE: Bowling on lanes 5-6, the Allis boys (dad, Tom, and sons, Mike and Scott) stole the show by starting with 26 strikes before Scott broke off in the ninth frame. Tom went on to string 10 strikes en route to 287 and Mike also had 10 and finished with 288. Several others in the league got into the act, however, as Bob Foss Jr. of Medina had 279 on lanes 11-12, and Attica’s Joe Trigilio 269 and Doody 264 on lanes 3-4.
n GAME TWO: Mike Allis and Frank DiMartino of Batavia, a member of the opposing Northeast Industrial team, hooked up in a match for the ages (at least in Batavia-area annals), as each registered 299 games. The league awards team points for individual matches. Allis left a 10-pin while DiMartino left a stone 9-pin. Spiotta had a shot at his first 300 game on lanes 9-10 but the 2-4-5 thwarted him on the 11th ball. He finished with 287. And Curtis Foss followed his father’s lead by shooting a 279 on lanes 11-12.
n GAME THREE: Two more bowlers – both substitutes – came within a pin of perfection as Mike Lavender, filling in for the Oakfield Hotel team on lanes 3-4, and Steve O’Dell of Oakfield, filling in for Batavia Tailors on 9-10, each posted 299 games. Phil DiMartino, Frank’s brother and teammate, rolled 10 straight strikes before leaving a 10-pin for 289, while Doody, a member of the Archway Cookies team, capped off his big morning with 278. A 4-pin on the last ball cost him his third 800 series.
n THREE-GAME SERIES: Mike Allis closed with 238 for an 825 series, which is high in the league this season. After Doody, Spiotta had 763, Scott Allis 752, Curtis Foss 736, Frank DiMartino 735, Phil DiMartino 728 and O’Dell 721.
As far as averages in the league are concerned, 13 of 36 regular bowlers are at 220 or better with Curtis Foss leading the way at 227, followed by Dave Montemarano Jr. at 226 and Rich Culver of Medina and Scott Allis at 225. Only one regular bowler is under 200.

REYNOLDS ROCKS IN PERRY
At the other end of the scoring spectrum was the Perry Bowling Center Scratch Open tournament over the weekend. In three of the four qualifying squads, it took less than a 200 average to advance to match play due to the flat oil pattern applied by tournament director Brett Van Duser.
Erik Reynolds of Brockport outlasted the field of 70 bowlers to claim the $1,000 first prize.
Reynolds defeated Ricky Zinone of Rochester, 236-233, in the championship match, after posting a 191-179 win over Mike Palozzi of Rochester in the quarterfinals and a 196-188 win over Mike Klis of Buffalo in the semifinals.
Reynolds advanced to match play by virtue of his 885 four-game series in the first of four qualifying rounds. The 885 was the second-highest qualifying score behind Brian Cline of Lockport’s 973.
Cline made it to the semifinals, where he lost to Zinone, 179-168. Zinone earned $500 for second while Cline and Klis each won $260. Other local qualifiers were Brian Weber of Perry and Adam Philp of Caledonia.

BALDUF HITS 300 AT MANCUSO’S
Matt Balduf of Byron has been on a bit of a roll since making the finals of the Batavia Masters Tournament in January.
The 40-year-old right-hander raised his average to 206 with a 201-300-215—716 effort last week in the Thursday Genesee Plumbing Handicap League at Mancuso Bowling Center. The perfect game is his first.
“I’ve been bowling pretty well and I’ve been bowling in a lot of tournaments since (the Masters),” said Balduf, who bowls for the Genesee Plumbing team and serves as the league secretary-treasurer.
Balduf, an employee of Mitchell Machine in Rochester, notched the center’s third certified 300 of the season. He said he used a Storm Passion ball on lanes 9-10. He rolled an 800 series two years ago.
Previously in the league, Ed Bishop of Le Roy rolled a 706 series.

Team and individual scores soared at the Ron Riggi Memorial four-person handicap tournament at Legion Lanes in Le Roy over the past two weekends.
The team of Scott Allis of Medina, Rob Sease of Brockport, Tracy Spanitz of Hilton and Norm Bialuski of Rochester placed first (winning $1,200) with a 2,850 total. Dave Montemarano Jr. of Batavia, Justin and Matt LaGeorge of Leicester and Brian Cline of Lockport finished second ($600) with 2,846.
LeRoyans Mickey Hyde, Mike Lapp, Tim Thomas and Jerry Blair tied with Montemarano, Mike Lavender of Holley, Ricky Mussell of Buffalo and Cline for third with 2,771 ($370 each).
Tournament director Mark Brown paid the top 10 (out of 60) teams. A 2,624 score was low to cash. In the singles competition, Montemarano won the $100 top prize with 768, beating Tom Riggi of Le Roy by three pins. Riggi won $50. Low to cash was 715.
