Four 299’s, 825 highlight Sunday league

Bowlers in the Lambert’s Jewelers/Bob Harris Realty/Scooter’s Restaurant of Le Roy Sunday Morning Classic League at Scopano’s Lanes put on a head-spinning scoring display last weekend, shooting four 299 games (including two in a head-to-head match), an 825 series, a 799 series, a 289 game, a 288 game and two 287 games.

Inside the numbers, the three members of the Tom’s Pro Shop team of Medina opened the morning by rolling 26 consecutive strikes and went on to post a Genesee Region USBC Association records with an 841 team game and 2,230 team series.

How prolific was the scoring, you ask?  This is what Ed Doody of Pavilion, who rolled the 799 on games of 264-257-278, had to say about it.

“Unbelievable,” he said.  “I shot the three games I did and wasn’t even close for any of the four weekly jackpots (high game each game and series).”

Let’s sort it out, in chronological order:

n       GAME ONE:  Bowling on lanes 5-6, the Allis boys (dad, Tom, and sons, Mike and Scott) stole the show by starting with 26 strikes before Scott broke off in the ninth frame.  Tom went on to string 10 strikes en route to 287 and Mike also had 10 and finished with 288.  Several others in the league got into the act, however, as Bob Foss Jr. of Medina had 279 on lanes 11-12, and Attica’s Joe Trigilio 269 and Doody 264 on lanes 3-4.

n       GAME TWO:  Mike Allis and Frank DiMartino of Batavia, a member of the opposing Northeast Industrial team, hooked up in a match for the ages (at least in Batavia-area annals), as each registered 299 games.  The league awards team points for individual matches.  Allis left a 10-pin while DiMartino left a stone 9-pin.  Spiotta had a shot at his first 300 game on lanes 9-10 but the 2-4-5 thwarted him on the 11th ball.  He finished with 287.  And Curtis Foss followed his father’s lead by shooting a 279 on lanes 11-12.

n       GAME THREE:  Two more bowlers – both substitutes – came within a pin of perfection as Mike Lavender, filling in for the Oakfield Hotel team on lanes 3-4, and Steve O’Dell of Oakfield, filling in for Batavia Tailors on 9-10, each posted 299 games.  Phil DiMartino, Frank’s brother and teammate, rolled 10 straight strikes before leaving a 10-pin for 289, while Doody, a member of the Archway Cookies team, capped off his big morning with 278. A 4-pin on the last ball cost him his third 800 series.

n       THREE-GAME SERIES:  Mike Allis closed with 238 for an 825 series, which is high in the league this season.  After Doody, Spiotta had 763, Scott Allis 752, Curtis Foss 736, Frank DiMartino 735, Phil DiMartino 728 and O’Dell 721.

As far as averages in the league are concerned, 13 of 36 regular bowlers are at 220 or better with Curtis Foss leading the way at 227, followed by Dave Montemarano Jr. at 226 and Rich Culver of Medina and Scott Allis at 225. Only one regular bowler is under 200.

REYNOLDS ROCKS IN PERRY

At the other end of the scoring spectrum was the Perry Bowling Center Scratch Open tournament over the weekend.   In three of the four qualifying squads, it took less than a 200 average to advance to match play due to the flat oil pattern applied by tournament director Brett Van Duser.

Erik Reynolds of Brockport outlasted the field of 70 bowlers to claim the $1,000 first prize.

Reynolds defeated Ricky Zinone of Rochester, 236-233, in the championship match, after posting a 191-179 win over Mike Palozzi of Rochester in the quarterfinals and a 196-188 win over Mike Klis of Buffalo in the semifinals.

Reynolds advanced to match play by virtue of his 885 four-game series in the first of four qualifying rounds. The 885 was the second-highest qualifying score behind Brian Cline of Lockport’s 973.

Cline made it to the semifinals, where he lost to Zinone, 179-168.  Zinone earned $500 for second while Cline and Klis each won $260. Other local qualifiers were Brian Weber of Perry and Adam Philp of Caledonia.

BALDUF HITS 300 AT MANCUSO’S

Matt Balduf of Byron has been on a bit of a roll since making the finals of the Batavia Masters Tournament in January.

The 40-year-old right-hander raised his average to 206 with a 201-300-215—716 effort last week in the Thursday Genesee Plumbing Handicap League at Mancuso Bowling Center.  The perfect game is his first.

“I’ve been bowling pretty well and I’ve been bowling in a lot of tournaments since (the Masters),” said Balduf, who bowls for the Genesee Plumbing team and serves as the league secretary-treasurer.

Balduf, an employee of Mitchell Machine in Rochester, notched the center’s third certified 300 of the season.  He said he used a Storm Passion ball on lanes 9-10.  He rolled an 800 series two years ago.

Previously in the league, Ed Bishop of Le Roy rolled a 706 series.

HIGH SCORES AT RIGGI EVENT

Team and individual scores soared at the Ron Riggi Memorial four-person handicap tournament at Legion Lanes in Le Roy over the past two weekends.

The team of Scott Allis of Medina, Rob Sease of Brockport, Tracy Spanitz of Hilton and Norm Bialuski of Rochester placed first (winning $1,200) with a 2,850 total.  Dave Montemarano Jr. of Batavia, Justin and Matt LaGeorge of Leicester and Brian Cline of Lockport finished second ($600) with 2,846.

LeRoyans Mickey Hyde, Mike Lapp, Tim Thomas and Jerry Blair tied with Montemarano, Mike Lavender of Holley, Ricky Mussell of Buffalo and Cline for third with 2,771 ($370 each).

Tournament director Mark Brown paid the top 10 (out of 60) teams.  A 2,624 score was low to cash. In the singles competition, Montemarano won the $100 top prize with 768, beating Tom Riggi of Le Roy by three pins.  Riggi won $50. Low to cash was 715.

GRUSBC YOUTH DOUBLES RESULTS

Teams from Perry, Mount Morris and Oakfield captured classification titles two weekends ago in the second annual GRUSBC Youth Doubles Tournament at Perry Bowling Center.  First- and second-place teams won trophies and scholarships.

Thirty-eight doubles teams competed, up from 23 last year. Winners were as follows:

THIS WEEK’S HONOR ROLL

-- Vin Bukiewicz Jr. of Batavia made a run at perfection in the Polish Falcons League at Mancuso’s last week.  A bowler for 40-plus years, the Chapin Mfg. employee strung 11 strikes before leaving four pins on his last ball.  “I was really shaking on the last ball and got it wide,” he said. “It didn’t make it up to the pocket.

-- Also at Mancuso’s, Nicole Eddy of Oakfield had a big night in the Wednesday Ladies League with a 656 series while Gary MacDonald of Stafford put together two big weeks in the Firemen’s League with 718 and 665.  In the Morrison Garage/Pepsi League, Chase Cone of Stafford rolled 704, and in the Monday Night Men’s League, Steve Van Son of Darien Center shot 710.

-- Matt Beardsley of Fillmore started with 278 en route to a 747 series in the Friday Night Men’s League at Letchworth Pines in Portageville, while Sam J. Monachino led the way with 290—711 in the Sloat Tire Handicap League at Scopano’s Lanes.

-- In the WNY Firefighters Tournament over the weekend at Allie Brandt Lanes in Lockport, Batavian Derek Leach recorded his first 700 series ever – 216-269-235—720 in the singles competition.  He also bowled in the doubles with his uncle, Paul Bacon, who had 710 in the doubles and 715 in singles.

Tournament bowling
By mikep on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 (EST)

Some of them bowl in scratch tournaments in WNY and beyond, some bowl in local tournaments and some just bowl on house shot leagues -- it's a mixed bag.  Like I've said before, let's get a PBA Experience or Sport Bowling league going in the Genesee Region USBC.  Next year, the PBA will be running PBA Experience Tournaments for local bowlers who compete in these tough shot leagues.

Mancuso's is interested in running a PBA Experience League on Tuesday nights next season. I figure it could run for 24 weeks -- three patterns, eight weeks for each pattern.  If we could get 24 bowlers -- 8 teams of three or 12 teams of two.  If two-man, maybe bowl four games.

Personally, I'm bored with house shot leagues. I want to bowl on tougher shots to have a better chance at scratch tournaments by learning what equipment works best on certain patterns and to become more comfortable left of the third arrow.  Please spread the word.  I know Scott Prince and some of his buddies are interested, and there are a few guys in Batavia who want in.

John,

Do you have the breakdown of bowlers in the tournament?

Total number and what halls (or communities) they bowl out of.  Just wondering.

GRUSBC Scratch Eliminator
By Justin3 on Friday, March 21, 2008 (EST)

Mike,

Here is the information you were looking for:

38 Entries from Livingson Lanes

22 Entries from Perry Bowl

21 Entries from Mt. Morris Lanes

4 Entries from LeRoy

5 Entries from Letchworth Pines

17 Entries from Mancuso, Oakfied, ect.

So if you total everything up your looking at, out of a total of 107 entries 21 came from the former Batavia Assoc, and 86 came from the former Perry Assoc.  Hopefully being held in Oakfield next will help draw a few more entries.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully, in time the association will come together as one and participation from the various locations will increase.

bowlers

24 weeks sounds great but what about 5 weeks on each pattern and the 6 being a position round on a major pattern. Weather your a tournament bowler or not wouldnt you like to see where your abilities are. I would aslo like to say that john runs one hell of a tournament and that it open to all association bowlers  Why is it that everyone is not allowed to bowl in the batavia masters i thiught we are one association. if you opened it up it would bring at least 30 more entries. we would come and bowl. just my 2 cents.

take care scott

My two cents
By jarvis85 on Saturday, March 29, 2008 (EST)

In time the association will come together, however until this happens we need to encourage all bowlers to support our local tournaments, no matter where they are located.

The association tournament is being held in Albion (team) and Caledonia (doubles and singles) . I hope everyone makes an effort to bowl this tournament. Dates are April 4,5,6,11,12,13.

The association has a web site that is a work in progress, next year I hope that we will have the entry blanks for all our tournaments on the web site so that we will be able to download them or perhaps fill them in electronically
