Lynda Barnes defeated Sean Rash in the Clash of The Champions, 258-237 to win $50,000.
Barnes reached the title match by defeating U.S. Women's Open champion Liz Johnson 225-204 in the semifinals, while Rash advanced with a 226-191 victory over Tim Pfeifer, a junior at Robert Morris University and the USBC Intercollegiate Singles champion.
First, however, all four players won sudden death rounds against three other competitors. Barnes' group included Wendy Macpherson, who rose to stardom as an 18-year-old amateur by winning the 1986 U.S. Women's Open at Gage Center Bowl in Topeka.
Barnes rolled three strikes in four tries to outlast Brittni Hamilton and Lucy Sandelin and advance to the semifinal round. Pfeifer, 20, was the next to advance, beating Jason Price, Tom Baker and David O'Sullivan.
The highlight of the sudden death portion followed when 17-year-old Jenny Brown rolled eight consecutive strikes before falling to Johnson, who was perfect all nine times. Elysia Current, of Wichita, and Kelly Kulick also were in the group.
The final qualifier was Rash, who shot strike, nine, strike to defeat Pete Weber, Mike Rose Jr. and Adam Martinez. Weber suffered the same fate as Macpherson, with a six on his only shot.
Each sudden death loser took home $1,250, while the semifinal losers pocketed $5,000 each.
The Clash of Champions will be broadcast as two one-hour events at 4 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.
