Machon and Granda Win Doubles Gold Medal

Zussie Machon and Sofia Granda of Guatemala bowling on the last squad of the day win Doubles Gold at the 2009 PABCON Championships.

Silver for Mexico and bronze for Dominican Republic

The duo averaged 218.42 on the last of three squads Wednesday at Carolina Bowling Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico to win the title 164 pins ahead of their nearest competitor.

Granda, the 2001 World Games champion, led the team with 1366 (227.67), the highest 6-game series in the championship thus far, and Machon contributed 1255 for 2621 pinfall total.

2009WWCDanielaAlvarado.jpg2009WWCSandraGongora3.jpgMexico's rising stars Sandra Gongora (left) and Daniela Alvarado (right) totaled 2457 (204.75) including a huge 525 in game #5 to help grab the silver medal. Alvarado had 1262 and Gongora, silver medalist in the 2009 Women's World Championships Singles event, added 1195.

Dominican Republic's Paula Vilas and Aumi Guerra (below left, l-r) won the bronze medal with 2440. Vilas led the duo with 1271 and Guerra, who qualified for the PBA Women's Series this season, had 1169.

2009WWCPaulaVilasAumiGuerra.jpgThe best doubles from defending champion United States, Kim Terrell-Kearney and Lynda Barnes, held the lead going into the final squad with 2438, but ended up in fourth place, narrowly missing a medal by two pins.

Team USA's Diandra Asbaty and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard finished fifth with 2398, while Shannon O'Keefe and Shannon Pluhowsky were eighth with 2341.

Sandwiched between the Americans were two teams from Colombia. Paola Gomez teamed with two-time world champion Clara Juliana Guerrero to land in sixth place with 2364 while Rocio Restrepo and Luz Adriana Leal finished seventh with 2342.

2009WUSOKarenMarcano.jpgSingles champion Karen Marcano (right), who ended up in 10th place with sister Alicia at 2328) held on to the lead in All Events (combined results in Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team events) after 12 of 24 games with 2602 pinfall total and an average of 216.10.

Two-time U.S. Open champion Terrell-Kearney leaped two spots into second place with 2588, with Asbaty in third at 2554. Guerrero, who won the All Events title at the WWC, moved into fourth place with 2526, while Granda used her 1366 from the Doubles to rocket from 39th to fifth place with 2516.

Competition in 2009 PABCON Championships continues Thursday with the Trios event. Medals will be also awarded for Team, All Events and Masters, which consists of the top 16 from the All Events standings.
