Barnes and Jones set Doubles Record

Posted by on Thursday, September 24, 2009 (EST)

Chris Barnes and Tommy Jones shattered the Doubles record at the 2009 PABCON Championships in Puerto Rico.

2009PCTommyJonesChrisBarnes.jpgA day after Team USA's Bill O'Neill broke the singles record, his teammates Tommy Jones and Chris Barnes (l-r) smashed the doubles record en route to win the second gold medal for the United States at the 2009 Pan American Bowling Confederation Championships.

Barnes and Jones combined to shoot 2788 on the first of three squads Wednesday and held on throughout the day to win the Doubles title at Carolina Bowling Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Jones led the duo with 1404 for six games, an average of 234.00, while Barnes totaled 1384, an average of 230.67. Their total broke the previous record of 2709, set by Mexico's Victor Mar and Vicente Mendez back in 1989.

"We are really pleased with how we performed, especially since the lanes played completely different today than they did in the practice session a couple days ago," Barnes said. "We came in with a strategy and had to change that quite a bit. We could have given away a lot of pins, but we changed our strategy."

Barnes and Jones used a huge final game of 536 to push their score over the record mark. Jones closed with 279, while Barnes added 257.

"It was a huge advantage for Tommy and I to get to bowl together," Barnes said. "We see the lane very similarly, and we both had a very clear picture of what was going on. We talked our way through everything today."

Puerto Rico's Frankie Colon and Luis Rodriguez took the bronze with 2569. The final Team USA pairing of Cassidy Schaub and Patrick Allen ended up eighth with 2476.

O'Neill (pictured right) continued to lead in All Events (combined results in Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team events) after 12 of 24 games with 2800 pinfall total and an average of 233.04. Barnes moved into second place with 2735 with Jones in third at 2712. Colon Jr. is fourth with 2697, followed by Singles silver medalist Jorge Rosado, Mexico, with 2681 and Haynes and Andres Gomez, Colombia, who are tied for sixth place with 2646.

Competition in 2009 PABCON Championships continues Thursday with the Trios event. Medals will be also awarded for Team, All Events and Masters, which consists of the top 16 men and top 16 women from the All Events standings.
