ARLINGTON, Texas - Nearly $60,000 in prize money has been paid out to bowlers who competed in the recently completed New York State Championship Tournament, an event that was conducted by the United States Bowling Congress.
The tournament concluded May 24 and prize checks were put in the mail June 11. USBC stepped in to conduct the event during a time of transition for the New York State Bowling Association.
"I'm pleased that USBC was able to step in and make sure the championship event was conducted without disruption to the bowlers," USBC Chief Operating Officer Kevin Dornberger said. "Now it is time for USBC to step back and let the newly formed Empire State Bowling Association take over all future operations."
The formation of the Empire State Bowling Association came as result of the decision by USBC to revoke the charter of the New York State Bowling Association after approximately $274,000 was embezzled from the NYSBA.
"We appreciate all the teams that competed in the state tournament during this time of transition," newly elected Empire State Bowling Association president Mike Pettinella said. "I would also like to assure our members that it is a brand new day for organized bowling in our great state."
The new Empire State USBC Bowling Association represents approximately 80,000 members and is separate from the New York State USBC Women's Bowling Association and the New York State USBC Youth Association.
